1. 's yapısının kullanıldığı yerler

1.1. (a/the) + kişi / hayvan ismi + isim

1.2. (a/the) + organizasyon ismi + isim

Bu yapıyı "the A of B" kullanarak oluşturmak da mümkündür.

1.3. (a/the) + yer ismi + isim

1.4. tekil isim + isim

Çoğul isim + isim durumunda 's yerine sadece ' kullanılabilir.

- my sisters' room

1.5. zaman belirten isim + isim

- Tomorrow's meeting has been canceled.
- I've got a week's holiday.
               three weeks' holiday.

Bu cümlede "three weeks' holiday" yerine "a holiday of three weeks", ya da "a three week holiday" demek te mümkün.

1.6. bir hayvan ismi + o hayvandan üretilen şey

- cow's milk
- lamb's wool
- a bird's egg
- goat's cheese

Bir ürün elde etmek için o hayvan öldürülmüş ise,

- calf-skin
- chicken soup

- fox fur

1.7. bir hayvan ismi + hayvanın vücudunun bir parçası

1.8. kullanan kişi + kullanılan şey

Kullanan kişinin eylem üzerinde bir denetimi yoksa aşağıdaki yapı da kullanılabilir.

2. "Of" yapısının kullanıldığı yerler

2.1. (a/the) + isim + nesne ismi

- the door of the room
- the beginning of the story

Bu yapıda 's kullanılabilirse de "A of B" yapısı daha iyidir.

2.2. (a/the) + isim + organizasyon ismi

- the decision of the Government
- the success of the company

Bu yapıyı 's ile oluşturmak da mümkündür.

2.3. (a/the) + isim + uzun tekil isim

- I met the wife of the man who lent us the money.

2.4. all, both, each, either, neither, none ile kullanılabilir.

a) all (=hepsi de)
                     the
all + (of) + my/your/.. + isim/this/that
                    (these/..)

- All (of) my friends like riding.
- I've all (of) the books.
- I've stopped believing all (of) that years ago.

İsmin belirleyici yapı (the, my, ..) taşımaması durumunda "of" kullanılmaz.

- All whisky is expensive
- All children can be naughty sometimes.

"you, us, them, .." kullanılması durumunda sadece "all of" yapısı kullanılabilir.

- All of them enjoy dancing.
- All of you are wrong.
- They want to see all of us.

"All" yerine "every" kullanılabilir. Ancak, "all of" yerine "every one of" gelir.

- He interviewed every one of us.

both + (of) + these/those + (isim)

- Both (of) vases are antique.

e) neither (= ne ... ne de)

neither + tekil isim

- Neither job will meet his requirements.

f) none (= hiçbiri de)

3. Of ... , cümle

- Of late, I haven't been feeling well.
  Son zamanlarda, kendimi iyi hissetmiyorum.

- Of all the people applied, I was found suitable for the post.
   (=Out of all the people who applied ...)
  Tüm başvuranlar içinde, ben işe uygun bulundum.

4. of + nitelik / nicelik belirten kelime + isim

- It is of no use to try and solve it.
- This is of great importance.

Bu yapıda, aslında, Türkçe'ye aktarım esnasında yapılması gereken şey yapıdaki ismi, kendisinden önce gelen ve nitelik/nicelik belirten kelimeyi de gözönünde bulundurarak, sıfat haline getirmektir. Yani,

- It is of no use to ...

yapısı

- It is useless to .. ("of" kelimesini "to bear = ta??mak" ile eşdeğer tutarak)

şeklinde, ya da

- This is of great importance

cümlesi

- This is very important

şeklinde ele alınmalı ve sonra Türkçe'ye aktarılmalıdır.
